A BRIEF HISTORY OF MONTESSORI CHILDREN'S COTTAGE

Montessori Children's Cottage schools are licensed by the Texas Department of Human and Regulatory Services. Our affiliation with the American Montessori Society began in 1974 and all primary and elementary grades are affiliated with A.M.S. We have the honor of being members of Corporate Hands, an organization of major corporations, who through their liason of Initiatives for Children, select a limited number of outstanding Centers. Through their educational programs, our staff is able to continue their education and training.

Montessori Children's Cottage first opened in January 1970 with four children in a morning class and Ms. Marilla Cohen as the teacher. In 1974, it was incorporated as a Texas Corporation. It has always been family owned and operated, non-sectarian, and in compliance with all federal, state, and A.M.S. standards and regulations.

Ms. Cohen began the school because of her concern for the children whom she had seen as a teacher and psychologist in public schools. The apathy and lack of interest in many so called underachievers in elementary and high schools, who were intellectually so capable, led her to believe that the best way to instill a love of learning was to begin in the early years.

Today, Ms. Cohen and her son Lee Cohen oversee Montessori Children's Cottage and Children's Cottage Infant Center. They have seen the growth from one classroom to several centers.

In 1972, Montessori Children's Cottage was the first Montessori school in Houston to offer a full day program for working parents. In 1984, Children's Cottage Infant Center opened after considerable research. It was the first Center offering a full day program for infants from six weeks through eighteen months. With her strong background in child development, Ms. Cohen did not hesitate to develop programs that met the needs of parents if the needs of children were met.

We have had an on-site heated indoor swimming pool since 1978, designed especially for teaching. The Director of Brookwoods Swim Center has developed programs for ages two through adult. This is located on our main campus, close to N. Loop W. and 290, within minutes of downtown and the Galleria Area. Aerobics and Adult Classes are also available.

Our policy for parents is "Open Door". Many events are planned to involve not only parents and grandparents; but parents are involved in activities to encourage a closer relationship with the staff--for it is only through teamwork of parents and staff that we can best meet the needs of the children.

MISSION:

The Mission of Montessori Children's Cottage is for parents to have Peace of Mind about their Children's Education and Care. We want to maximize the possibilities for children to develop to their fullest potential through a Montessori way of living and learning. At the heart of Montessori education is the role of the child, the environment and the teacher. In the Montessori classroom, the child may work alone or with a friend, the choice is usually up to him. He is free to work within the basic framework provided by the 'ground rules', which encourages respect for the rights of others and responsibility for the care and use of the environment.

Within certain limits, the child may choose the work that he is interested in doing. He can follow his natural desire to learn at his own pace. This non-competitive, inner-directed experience provides the foundation for a life-long love of learning.

The Montessori environment provides the child with attractive, child-size materials that are self correcting. This enables the child to be able to discover his own mistakes and correct them without anyone telling him he has made an error. This provides a sense of independence and protects his self-esteem.

The 'teacher' is primarily an observer and a guide. She helps the child find appropriate material but follows the child's lead by knowing his interests and level of development. The teacher is there to help the child learn to do things for himself.

The habits and skills which a child develops in a Montessori classroom are the foundation for a lifetime of learning and living. These will help him work more efficiently, to observe more carefully and to concentrate more effectively.

As we enter the twenty-first century with it's high level of technology, our children will need the strongest foundation we as parents and teachers can provide. Our goal at Montessori Children's Cottage is to enable children to develop this foundation for a way of learning, a way of living with self-respect, respect for others and our environment--and to always know the joy and satisfaction of continuous learning for a lifetime.
